A Message from Our Executive Director

Matt Poss, Executive Director

August started off in a positive way with our Back-to-School Event – nearly 500 children attended along with their families and other community members. We remain so thankful to our donors, sponsors, and volunteers who help make this annual event happen and continue to grow. It is events like this that continually remind me and our great staff of what it means to “Serve the People” and continue to give forward to the upcoming generations.

We also were lucky to host the Emmy-award winning series Navajo Highways for a day as they continue to advance children’s educational programs through a native lens. We are looking forward to their upcoming shows and pleased to know UICSL helped contribute to its story along with providing community space for meaningful partners.

Sports/fitness at UICSL is also taking off in ways we never imagined – huge credit to our Public Health and fitness team. We held a several days lacrosse camp and ended the month with an all-day basketball clinic taught by professional basketball player Analyss Benally and her family through their nonprofit AB5 Basketball. Seeing participants of all ages is inspiring and has motivated me personally to start playing basketball again recreationally along with coaching my own sons’ sports teams.

Through it all, the month of August also served as a strong period of SiiHasin (reflecting, Diné) for us an organization. We do so much and don’t often take time to appreciate or think about our successes, our failures, and learn from our experiences to gain the confidence or assurance to adapt to new situations and evolve. For the first time in four years, we decided to hold a management retreat, held at Red Butte Garden, for an entire day. We walked among the plants, listened to the silence, and brainstormed on how to take UICSL to the next steppingstone for growth. It was refreshing to hear everyone’s perspective and how each one of them contributes to the overall goals of the organization along with what theirs are for their respective teams. From this we can build and execute a cohesive strategy going into future years; I am looking forward to making an annual tradition.

Now onwards and upwards to September. We will be announcing a town hall in the coming months to share exciting updates for UICSL, visiting more tribal leaders within the state, meeting with IHS and community partners for ways to better advance native health, and remain committed to being a steward of resources for the broader community.

Wopila (With gratitude, Lakota Sioux)

Guiding Our Community:

A Message from the Board

Michael C. Walch, Board of Directors

Centuries ago, when Europeans began migrating to the Americas, they initially struggled to survive. They entered into an unfamiliar environment, unsure of how to adapt what they knew to their new surroundings. It was largely through the beneficence of this land’s natives that they learned where to find food and how to hunt, fish, and trap it, what plants would grow and which would not and how to successfully raise them, and how to survive the climate and diseases they encountered here. They quickly found that the natives’ knowledge and skills were often better suited to this land than their own.

A similar situation exists now, as the larger society becomes increasingly focused on divisions among segments of society, enforcement of political positions, wealth redistribution, and arrogation of power. Once again, it could learn a lot from common native practices and culture, such as collaborative and inclusive decision-making, respect for the wisdom of elders, sharing wealth, and commitment to the good of the community.

These latter values and practices are ingrained in the work of the Urban Indian Center, where modern medical practices are infused with the physical, mental, and emotional health benefits derived from community, preservation of culture, and inclusion. This preferable and holistic vision is part of the reason I’ve been glad to serve on the Center’s board for the past six years, and look forward to supporting it into the future.

Good Medicine: UICSL in Action

Our Executive Leadership Team gathers each month to talk about how we can continue to guide UICSL, strengthen the work we do, and think about where we want to go in the future. We work together to make decisions, support our staff, and stay focused on what matters most.

A big part of these conversations is listening to our managers and supervisors. We hear what they are seeing, what is working well, where we can improve, and what they would like to see for UICSL moving forward. Their feedback helps us better understand what our staff need and helps shape the direction we take as an organization.

We also want to make sure the work we do stays connected to the people at the heart of UICSL and the community we are here to serve.

In August, UICSL managers came together for a manager retreat. The retreat gave managers time to step away from their regular schedules and focus on the work of managing their departments. We talked about the challenges that come with being a manager, shared what we have learned from our own experiences, and discussed ways to handle some of the situations that come up in our departments. It was also a chance to spend time together outside of our usual work setting.

The retreat is one way UICSL invests in its managers and the departments they lead. Managers are responsible for turning organizational decisions into the work that happens within their departments, so having time to talk through issues and learn from one another is valuable. The ideas and information from the retreat can be taken back to individual departments and used to support staff, improve communication, and address the needs of each team.

The Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake thanks you for participating in the annual Back-to-School Event, which served over 500 attendees.

Thank you to our wonderful partners: Face Painting Paradise, Sacred Circle Healthcare, Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation Child Care Development Fund, Clark Planetarium, Restoring Ancestral Wind, University of Utah Center for Native Excellence & Tribal Engagement, Select Health, Waterford Upstart Early Learning Program, Salt Lake City Public Library, University of Utah Lead Testing, Utah Department of Health and Human Services (UDHHS) American Indian/Alaska Native Health & Family Services, Utah Poison Control, Salt Lake City School District Title VI Program, Best Buy, UDHHS Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (Waytoquit.org) and USANA Kids Eat Program.

Also, we would like to highlight the hairstylists: Samira Tsabetsaye-Hitlall, Tenzin Cruz, and Sierra, as well as DJ Will Hawes for providing the music. We appreciate your support and partnership!

On August 14th, Elders Corner members met at Tracy Aviary for an off-site meeting. The meeting was held in the Chase Mill Room, which gave everyone a comfortable place to gather and visit. The room had wooden floors, walls, ceilings, and a wooden staircase. Everyone enjoyed an indoor cookout-style lunch with smoked brisket, grilled marinated chicken thighs, baked beans, Elizabeth’s homemade potato salad, stone-ground rolls, and watermelon. After lunch and community announcements, members had time to explore Tracy Aviary on their own, enjoy the scenery, and visit with friends.

A total of 42 participants attended, along with staff and volunteers who helped with the meeting. One of the highlights was taking a group photo with everyone wearing their Elders Corner T-shirts. It was a good way to remember the day and have a picture of everyone together. The afternoon gave members a chance to get out, spend time with friends, talk, laugh, and enjoy a different setting for our meeting.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the food, activities, and meeting and to everyone who came out and spent the afternoon with us.

Advanced Diné Bizaad

Rebalancing Culture: Advanced Diné Bizaad

We completed our Advanced Diné Bizaad class, giving participants the chance to have hands-on experience with the language and practice using words in the things we do every day. We worked on words for washing clothes, going to the grocery store, counting money, ke’ and kinship, using words correctly in sentences, and lots and lots of practice.

To celebrate the continued learning, we usually end our 6 weeks with Bingo. Each participant calls out each space using the Navajo word that best supports what is being called. It gives everyone another chance to practice the words they have been learning throughout the class.

We are seeing that the more we repeat and use the language, the more comfortable and confident our participants become in speaking Diné Bizaad. It also reminds us how important it is to keep classes like this going and make them available to our community. Our language is what will keep our community strong and our future generations protected. It is our language that will allow us to remain who we are and continue passing that on.

Our Conversational Diné Bizaad class begins September 2, 2026.

Medicine Lacrosse

Building Community Through the Medicine Game

The Urban Indian Center’s Medicine Lacrosse Clinic was a hit! Over two days, youth and adults sharpened their skills, from scooping and handling the ball to experiencing the Creator’s game on a full size college field thanks to the Men’s Westminster Lacrosse team. We learned that no matter what our size, each person brings unique strengths that help build a strong team. We ended the clinic with a healthier take on Native Plate portion sizes and Indian tacos, thanks to the Echoing Spirits Youth Council. We are grateful to our coaches for sharing over 30 years of combined knowledge and love of the game. Most importantly, we ended the two days surrounded by youth, adults, families, and relatives. We are grateful for the connections made and look forward to growing the Medicine Game together.

Elders Corner Coffee & Chat

Coffee & Chat Hour was a colorful success!

On August 18th, our Coffee & Chat Hour welcomed Paint the Town, where participants learned to paint the beautiful landscape "Aurora Night." Everyone discovered their inner artist as creativity came alive with paint, brushes, and canvas. The artwork was amazing, and the smiles were even brighter! It was a wonderful morning filled with friendship, laughter, creativity, and community. Events like these nourish both the body and the soul!

Join us for our next Coffee & Chat Hour on September 15th for another fun and creative morning. We would love to see you there!

Walking in harmony

2026 Walking In Harmony Hiking Series

This year’s hiking season started off with an oldie but goodie where we enjoyed the mountain air, tall trees and the shared love for Mother Earth. Our group started the series off with a popular family friendly hike up Big Cottonwood Canyon. We could not get enough of Donut Falls! We have not only strengthened our physical bodies but overall wellness by building resilience, reducing stress and boosting self-confidence. Hiking isn’t just exercise, it is Medicine that can strengthen the mind, body, emotions, and spirit all at once, we leave the trail full of Harmony.

In The Steps Of Our Ancestors (ITSOA) Running Group

In the Steps Of Our Ancestors running group has been busy training for summer health! Recently, we took a well-deserved break from our regular running schedule to enjoy some time together, celebrate our progress and embrace the summer season. We strengthened all muscles by playing a game of kickball and ended the evening by gathering for dinner while sharing stories and catching up on each other’s summer adventures. This group of running relatives have come a long way, not only on the track, but in life. There are now grandkids walking with grandparents, adults wanting to walk/run farther and others who are looking forward to more races and the next challenge.

• Tuna salad with whole grain crackers makes for a great snack or small meal

Berries – For antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds
• Add frozen berries to yogurt or oatmeal
