The Special Diabetes Program for Indians grant sponsors our Annual Family Field Day, promoting motivation and dedication to leading an active, healthy lifestyle through physical movement. This year’s event highlighted multi-generational family activities with a theme of “Remembering Our Ancestors,” emphasizing purposeful movement integral to daily ancestral life. Participants engaged in activities that mirrored ancient practices such as hunting and gathering bison, squash, and melons — foods still enjoyed today. Shinny, a traditional game, reinforced mental and physical well-being, while running and walking were celebrated as natural medicines from Mother Earth.
Special thanks to presenter Jerome ‘Hiana’ Thompson from 4 The Future Foundation for sharing Haudenosaunee/Iroquois traditions and values through the Indigenous Medicine game of lacrosse. This ceremonial game, historically bestowed by The Creator for ceremonial and healing purposes, fosters unity and healing among nations. The day concluded with Bison vegetable stew and rolls prepared by Native Chef Lucy Washakie, bringing together all attendees for a memorable and meaningful day of movement and gratitude toward our animal relatives.
